Бюро по делам освобожденных негров (Бюро освобожденных)
Было создано по требованию республиканцев [Republican] в марте 1865 при Военном департаменте [War Department] и ведало в период Реконструкции [Reconstruction] всеми вопросами, касавшимися улучшения социально-экономического положения освобожденных рабов. Возглавлял Бюро генерал О. Хауард [Howard, Oliver Otis]. Несмотря на нехватку средств и работников, Бюро удалось построить много больниц, более 1 тыс. школ и колледжей [black college]; филиалы Бюро действовали во всех южных штатах. Из-за сопротивления судов и Конгресса успехи Бюро в области предоставления гражданских прав неграм оказались невелики. Демократы обвиняли Бюро в поддержке Республиканской партии и растрате средств. К моменту его закрытия Конгрессом в 1872 влияние Бюро сильно снизилось, а многие его функции еще раньше были переданы другим ведомствам
